A statue of the Virgin Mary in the Mexican state of Colima that is reportedly weeping tears has drawn crowds of onlookers and questions about a potential miracle.

The statue was first noticed "crying" in October — but videos of the statue's purported tears gained traction on social media in mid-November.

The majority of these statues have been proven to be fakes. I doubt this one is true either.

Don't hold us in suspense here, is the area where the store in Colima located predominately a Catholic area? Mary and statues is sort of their thing. I couldn't see a protestant or otherwise other non-catholic tempted to fall for it.

That's a very interesting point there!! I do wonder if the area is predominately Catholic?

I'm glad that they called it out as fraud and didn't try to just hide it away.
Me too, honestly the RCC are often pretty good about it, but sometimes they miss is IMO.

...and it is often the case that the clergy, knowing the truth about some alleged Marian miracle, nevertheless look favorably on Catholic laypersons reverencing and believing in those things.

They think that devotion to the Virgin Mary is good and appropriate, so they won't make an issue about the truth or falsity of the particular event or object that has attracted all the interest.

Bingo

I actually have major issues with the disparity between what the "official" doctrine on veneration is compared to the reality of how it is done in many parishes, especially in places like Mexico, the Amazon basin, and the Philippines.
