What are your thoughts on living independently versus residing in a retirement community or assisted living facility?

I really have no interest in living in a community of old people. It seems like it would be nice to have someone else mow the yard and shovel the snow but I like the freedom of having my own place.

If I get to the point where I can't look after myself I may reconsider, but the thought of downsizing so I can live in a small flat has no appeal to me at all right now.

I like the thought of having people my age when I get older, all together in a community. I wouldn't be opposed to being in an assisted living place, but it's so expensive.

It's worth keeping in mind proximity to neighbors and what ailments they may have.

A thing that always put my parents off was the fact they didn't care for TV and didn't want to be in close quarters, potentially with thin walls, with neighbors who did like endless TV and were hard of hearing so turned the volume up. At the time our next door neighbor (in a townhouse) was well into her 80s and enjoyed a particular show on TV. It was only on very rarely but when it was we knew about it because she turned the TV up loud so she could hear it.

We never made an issue of it because it was so infrequent and she often took parcels in for us if they arrived while we were at work. Had it been a daily occurrence I'd have grown tired of it very fast.

"Old" is always 10 years older than you are. A proverb my dad shares.

Very true. I don't feel like my chronological age, although every once in a while my body reminds me I'm not 25 any more.

I've always considered old to be at least 20 - 40 years older than I am.

I am not old. At the moment I appreciate living in a neighborhood of mixed ages. We purchased this house with the idea we would live here until we couldn't any longer. We have several places around here that have independent living apartments, assisted living apartments and nursing home section. That would interest me.

It's always hard to know what will trigger the decision that a home is no longer suitable. Steps are an obvious potential problem although a house with a large enough downstairs can be used as an effective ranch even if an upstairs exists. If you have living space, sleeping space, cooking space and a bathroom at ground level you can stay even if you never go upstairs. But then people may decide they just don't need as much space and move somewhere smaller, that takes less maintenance and is cheaper to heat etc.

We have a lot of special types of housing for people who are elderly. It's usually more expensive, but there are a lot of perks included in the prices. Sometimes that could include having your yardwork taken care of so you don't have to do anything and in some facilities, nurses help with needs.

My wife's aunt lived out her days in an old peoples' home. She started out in the section where you live more or less independently but things like lawn care and snow removal were done centrally, and there were a few protective rules against door-to-door soliciting and the like. Then as her faculties faded she moved into a smaller apartment where her meals were provided and medical staff made sure she didn't forget to take her medications.

Had she needed it they have other facilities where medical staff will do whatever is needed to help someone live.
