Was Paul just a missionary or would he also be considered a pastor?

He was a missionary, but also an apostle. Part of that is his role in starting churches and getting them established and then passing the leadership off to the local believers.

Were any of the Apostles also pastors?
Certainly they were shepherds of the established churches. They were evangelists. They were teachers.
God had given them gifts to accomplish their roles wherever they traveled. I don't know what title they used, other than Apostle.
Lamm, your question makes me wonder about Peter as the Roman Church dubs him the first pope, yet there is no reference to him even being in Rome within the Bible. Can we crown a person in the Bible with a title that the Bible doesn't give them?

Perhaps it's "or something."
The RCC and EOC have created so many non-verifiable stories that one cannot trust their claims. This is why fiction writer after fiction writer use these churches stories to create mystery and intrigue. Dan Brown is probably the most notorious when considering contemporary fiction.

It is generally believed and indicated by history that Peter was in Rome. Whether his bones have been discovered is something else. And, yes, it is true that the Bible does not say anything about Peter and Rome. In fact, though, that has nothing to do with the claims of the RCC itself about the Papal office or the Rock or any of that. The claim is about Peter, not Rome.

I didn't have Rome in mind at all when I started this thread

He was an Apostle, who Evangellized the Faith establishing Churches wherever he went, appointing Bishops and Presbyters and Deacons, consecrating them to Ekklesiastical Service...

The Apostolic Calling of God is a rare Gift...

It is one Paul entreats us to emulate...

That's the root meaning of the word, but I believe that jsimms was saying, correctly, that Paul is considered to be an equal of The Twelve, the Apostles (with a capital A) whom Christ commissioned to direct His church after the Ascension.

An apostle is a missionary.
Apostle Gr one sent
Missionary
Lat one sent

1Cor 4:9
For I think that God hath set forth us the Apostles last,
as it were appointed to death:
for we are made a spectacle unto the world,
and to angels,
and to men.

He goes on to describe their lives...
And ends with:

1Cor 4:16
Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

An Apostle is as a death appointed exemplar, a spectacle...
I do not measure up at all...
How about you?

Are you saying that God did not set up missionaries in His church? The word is not used so why do we have missionaries?
As I said previously Gk apostelo means I send and Latin mitto means I send The word apostle comes from the Gr and in the Vulgate it is missionary.

I know there are differing views on the topic depending on one's denomination.

I would call them evangelists, which is clearly a gift from God to some of his elect children.
There are no Apostles today. There are people who falsely call themselves apostles, but that was also found in the early church.
Missionary is clearly a coined word from a later era.

Where does the word apostle come from? It it not from the Greek for one sent?
Missionary comes from Latin meaning one sent.
Evangelists do preach the gospel however they are not sent ones.
The word evangelist comes from the Greek good message or one who brings good news.
The gift of evangelism is not the same as the gift of being an apostle
Why do you capitalize the A in Apostle? There must be a reason. Thanks

I was asking MennoSota because he is the one who used it last.
What is the reason? BTW
God set up in His church apostles and since His church is still here I would have to assume that apostles are as well.

Understood. However, the question was already answered.

Not at all. Are the Founding Fathers still running the USA? The country and the Constitution are still here, though, so???

Christ chose twelve men...then Paul. It is clear from Scripture and history both that he did not call and commission hundreds or thousands to perform the same duties.
