Here is the thing, private donations dont work, first of all most dont live by those principles, second to many second guess why someone is like that instead of showing the love of Christ to them, third many issues such as aging and not having enough are ongoing issues and bigger than most churchs or individuals can take care of. You address those issues and solve them and then I can accept that approach but till then we need things like Social Security and welfare. I agree that they could be better managed and that some do take advantage but the solution is to weed out those problems, not scrap the whole system.
Personally, I do not favor violating the Commandments, or advocating that such a thing be done, even for the sake of achieving a practical end or what some people would consider to be such.

If this were not a religious forum and this not a topic that was framed so as to have a religious dimension, of course the discussion might take a different course. I don't know what that other course might be, but that is academic since this is a Christian-oriented thread as it stands.

The Lord, Jesus Christ, advocated changes in behaviour for the people and for the leaders of the nation. Justice is both for people to live and for governments to maintain, nurture, and enact within their sphere.

Tax laws and etc. do not constitute an advocacy of or urging the people to change their ways. LOL

Just laws and alleviation of poverty were in fact part of the Law that God gave through Moses.

Deuteronomy 23:24-25 24 “If you go into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag. 25 If you go into your neighbor's standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor's standing grain.

Did you notice that none of that refers to a government policy, tax, agency, or bureaucrat administrator??

Well, was God not their king? Surely he was until they rejected him a few centuries after Moses was given the Law by God. And being king of Israel God legislated for them, giving them laws to govern many matters among which is the law I quoted governing the treatment of one's neighbours.

God has always led, look at Abraham tithing to Melchesidek, also what led him to come out from his home, was it not God? He has always laid down certain rules or laws. Also look at Cain and Abel, they knew what to sacrifice and how.
