I'm having a routine cat scan in the morning. I'm always told no food for 4 hours prior to it but this is the first time they're telling me no liquids including water for 4 hours prior either. I got yelled at 15 years ago by a nurse who told me that no liquids never includes water and I need to have water to stay hydrated and keep my veins open. So this was unusual to be told NO water either.

Has anyone had a cat scan (with contrast) and do you get to drink water or not before the procedure?

Yes I had a CT Scan with contrast in 2017 and I think water was okay but not sure if I remember correctly, sorry. My last CT Scan was without contrast in October and I know I could have water with that but no food for 4 hours. What are they looking at?

It was a routine scan to check out my neck to see the lymph nodes. I don't have any swelling or pain so I'm not concerned by it. My doctor wants scans done every 3 months.

Well, I'm glad you are getting it checked out regularly. Nothing to fool around with.

Yes, but this makes me really realize how much of a failure out healthcare system is with cost. One cat scan could be a huge blow to someone without insurance!

Mine are $3,000.
I was just guessing by what the insurance provider guessed..mine are probably the same cost or near. I get them for my lungs that have nodules on them. They are checking to see if they grow any larger and so far in a year they have not. So, that's a good thing so far. :)

First, blessings on having good results from the cat scan.

Second, the cost of health care in this country is beyond ridiculous.

Third, why can’t you drink water before your cat’s medical procedure? :glasses:

Thank you!

I think it's because they don't want anyone vomiting and then chocking on it. But my scan this time wasn't even 15 seconds long so I don't get that one at all!

With my health issues over had A LOT of CT scans. A few with contrast and lots without.

If I go into the ER and they do one they say it's fine that I have ate or drank. But if my doctor orders something they sometimes will make me not eat or drink 4 hours prior.

I've had only one with contrast, and I think it was a complete fast - water included - but that's to the best of my recollection. It was a few years ago. Otherwise I don't recall any fasting restrictions for others I've had.
