John 1:6-13
v.6 John describes John the Baptist as one who was "sent" much as Jesus was sent for a specific purpose. Much as he sends us now. The word sent is the transliterated word apostello- to order one to go to a place appointed, to send away, dismiss.
John was one who was a witness of the light that others might believe. The word witness is martyria- a testifying, what one testifies

v.8 John said clear he was not the light, but he was a witness to it. In verse 20 of this chapter he clears says that he is not the Messiah. But, in verses 15,32 he bears witness that he sees the Spirit descend on the Son of Man.

vs.9 the true light enlightens every man.
"the true" alethinos- that which has the real nature corresponding to the name, real, true, genuine, opposite of what is fictitious, counterfeit.
"enlightens" - photizo- to enlighten, illumine, to bring to light. What does Jesus bring to light? Hebrews 1:3 says He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of his nature. So, when we see Jesus we see what God is like. He makes the eternal God visible to us. He is one who reveals things like light does.

vs.10- even though the world was made through Him the world didn't know Him. Colossians 1:16 says that everything that is visible and invisible was made by Him and for Him.
1 Cor 8:6 Jesus is from whom are all things and we all exist through Him
the word "know" is ginosko- to learn, to know, come to know, understand and perceive, get a knowledge of perceive, feel

vs.11- Jesus came to His own "The Jews" and they did not receive him. The words "his own" is idios- pertaining to one's self, one's own, beonging to one's self.
"receive" vs.11 paralambano- to take to, to join to one's self, a metaphor for accepting or acknowledging one to be such as he professes to be. In other words, while some accepted Jesus, most of the Jews did not accept Him as the Christ and still don't.

vs.12- those who did receive him he gave them the right to become children of God. The word right is exousia- the power of choice, the power of authority.
vs.13- this verse seems to act as a counter weight to verse 12 because it tells us this was not because of the will of the flesh or man, but because the person is born of God.
The word "born" is the word gennao- metaphor of God making men his sons through faith in Christ's work.
1 John 2:29 tells us that those who practice righteousness are born of Him.
