Martin Luther really was a remarkable and powerful figure in the history of Christianity. No wonder that Time Magazine called him the most important person in Church history, other than Christ himself, for the past thousand years.

It is a shame that, having been the 'founder' of the Reformation, he is automatically subject to vilification by any Christian today who would rather that there never were a Reformation, and that they consequently do not care to know more about Dr. Luther, the most acclaimed Bible scholar of his day.

Luther was such a man that today would be hated more than Trump I think. He wasn't very kind in his speeches. In fact, he seemed to revel in insulting those who disagreed with him. But God still brought about change through that man which is a miracle in itself. LOL

Luther lived in a VERY different world.... one that was the antithesis of our "PC" culture... one that used (often extreme) polemics - especially in academic situations (Luther was a professor). BUT even in his world, he became increasingly... well..... harsh to put the best construction on things. He was NOT like that for the first few years but as time moved on, he became frustrated AND he felt his opposition was NOT the Roman Church or the pope but the devil... his harshness was focused on Satan. I've read a few books about Luther.... and living in this VERY, VERY different world.... and believing that saying things as nicely AS YOU GET gets you further than being, well, not nice.... I WISH Luther would have said about 90% of his stuff differently. BTW, so did many Lutherans in his own day. Would that have made ANY difference? I'm 95% sure it would not..... but still, I'm often pretty uncomfortable with the "tone" (which by NO MEANS was one-sided..... he tended to RESPOND to not nice with a double dose of the same).

While Lutherans esteem the faith of Luther.... we don't always esteem the man. And of course, we hold that while he was often very correct, he was also at times quite wrong (as all but me can be).
