Greetings,

My name is Sean and I'm new to this forum. Since 2012, I have been a member of Christian Forums, posting under the same user name (Sean611).

A little bit about my spiritual journey: I grew up in the Jehovah's Witness cult, but left at the age of 18. After that, I became an atheist/agnostic for a few years. I dabbled a bit in Methodist/Baptist communities, then became Anglican by way of the Episcopal Church. Spent four years in the Episcopal Church in various parish leadership roles, then left in 2016 due to innovations at the National level. Took a break, then joined a confessional Lutheran parish in the Missouri Synod in November 2017.

As far as hobbies, I really enjoy music (rock/metal/classical), movies (especially horror), sports, games, history, and theology.

That's about all I can think of, just glad to be here and thank you Josiah for the invite!

Hi Sean! I don't remember you from CF (I was LilLamb219) but that doesn't mean much since that place had a lot of members! We're glad to have you here :)

Do you still have family members who are JWs? Just curious how they feel about you being Lutheran?

Unfortunately, yes I do. My aunt, uncle, their daughter, and my grandmother on my mother's side are all still Jehovah's Witnesses. My mother and father were disfellowshipped either shortly before or after their divorce. My brother-in-law also has a lot of Jehovah's Witness family. My grandmother, who is a Jehovah's Witness, was a Missouri Synod Lutheran before becoming a JWs as coincidental as that may seem. They don't really talk to me much, but I know they think Lutheranism is pretty Catholic.

That's interesting about your grandmother! I wonder what encouraged her to switch over?

That's a great question! We have spoken about it and it has to do with the concept of hell. She thought the idea that God could allow people to suffer in hell for all eternity was not what a loving God would do. However, the idea of being utterly destroyed body and soul at Armageddon, for the slightest slip up or infraction, is apparently okay to her.

I wonder how she feels about God's actions in the Old Testament and what he commanded some of his people to do to others?
