      Maybe this'll help:

"If the mercy is true, you must therefore bear the true, not an imaginary sin. God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners. Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong (sin boldly), but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world."

So no-one's really addressed the OP. I've given an opinion on it. Any takers?

Dr. Luther was most certainly not mad. Of course, I'm pretty sure that Pope Leo X and Albrecht of Mainz weren't playing with a full deck and Johann Eck? Well, eck.

Luther spent way too many years in fear that the Lord would not forgive his sins. His epiphany that our sins were forgiven at the cross gave him much peace.

So, in short, Luther wasn't say to go out and sin.
It is a hellish epiphany to advise people to sin boldly. More a "revelation" from Satan than one from God.

Too clever by half, as a Brit might say, such advice is wicked not good. It does not make Martin Luther insane to give it all it does is make his theological and pastoral advice bad.

I thought I did address the first post when I observed that Martin Luther's sanity (or lack of it) was not relevant. What matters is if his theology is true or false.

We all got a little bit o crazy in us and Luther showed that even God can work with someone who isn't a great example of what a Christian should be saying at times.
If you want to rile people up then go to a Christian site and give God ALL the glory for your salvation.
