Actually I thought it would be the other way around and give the Republicans more seats

What would happen to The Bear Flag?

      I think it looks great.

Were I a citizen of the California Republic, I would find the idea of division unbearable.

It might give them two Senators in Southern California that they do not now have--but only might. On the other hand, however, it also creates two other new states in both of which there are solid democrat majorities that are almost certain to elect four democrat Senators between them.

From talking to a few folks from CA (mostly online) it sounds like many in rural areas think the state legislature is disconnected from reality and would like to break away from it.
Many States are that way. For as liberal as Minnesota is, it's only a few bigger metro areas that are blue. Most farmers are conservative and that makes up much of Minnesota. But, the metro gets 5 of the 8 congressional seats. Minnesota hasn't voted Republican since 1968. We're also the 4th highest taxed State in the nation. All that and no one is calling for East and West Minnesota (liberals on the East and conservatives on the West).

It seems pretty standard that cities vote Democrat and the countryside votes Republican. Whether or not a state wants to split so that people can be better represented by the people they want to represent them doesn't have to be universal.
"Do what thou will shall be the whole of the law" - Aleister Crowley

"If you love me, obey my commandments" - Jesus Christ

The Bible comes as a complete package. If we want to pluck verses out of context so make them mean what we want them to mean, if we want to ignore the passages that are inconvenient to our outlook, we should be intellectually honest enough to throw our Bibles in the trash and admit we are following Crowley and not Christ.

Yes, let them join with Canada, and Oregon, Washington, Main, New York, and so on. Then the predominantly Republican states could form their own country, call it the USA if they like, and all will be well ... for a few days anyway.

Pope Gregory I was well known for his alms to the poor, and he gave quite generously of the riches donated to the Church by the wealthy people of Rome. Everything from money to land was given to the poor in some fashion. He made clear to his subordinates that their duty was to relieve the distress faced by the poor.

He ordered his clergy to go out into the streets to find and care for the poor in person.

I wasn't thinking politically...just that the state has more weird people per capita than our other states They shame us for thinking they're weird.

We should be so weird, they have the fifth largest economy in the world, are progressive on clean energy, have a budget surplus of 9 billion. I know most states including mine would be green with envy over those kind of numbers

I like the ring of "West Australia" and "East Almost Kiwi."
      Or...perhaps North Tasmania.
