There is now enough signatures to get a proposal to divide California into three states on the ballot. They would be called "Northern California", "Southern California" and "California". What do you think of this proposal. The article suggests that Southern California would be the poorest of the three ranking it 30th in the nation. While Northern California would be the second richest state in the union if it were created.

I think Quebec should secede from Canada. It would have the same chance of happening.

I dunno, I don't like the idea of 52 states... plus it will alter our flag.
But... if we can merge say Oklahoma and Louisiana with Texas!.... nvrmnd...I don't want to alter the shape of Texas... Unless!!.. etc etc lol
This is tough!

According to the article, most voters are not on board with this idea. The article says

"And earlier, in April, SurveyUSA released polling suggesting only 17 percent of the electorate would vote to divide the state in three."

I think it is broken. If you look at the voting maps of the last presidential election California is blue. If you look at county level California is a sea of red with a few blue patches. The blue patches are the big population centers, with enough people there to outweigh the more sparsely populated red areas. From talking to a few folks from CA (mostly online) it sounds like many in rural areas think the state legislature is disconnected from reality and would like to break away from it.

I think it is another case of gerrymandering on a grand scale

Oh, its broken, all right. However, Congress will never approve of this proposal because it will virtually guarantee two to four additional democrat US Senators and even more Electoral College votes for that party. Its interesting to some Californians, I am sure, but it has no chance of success.

Actually I thought it would be the other way around and give the Republicans more seats

What would happen to The Bear Flag?

I think it looks great.

Were I a citizen of the California Republic, I would find the idea of division unbearable.

It might give them two Senators in Southern California that they do not now have--but only might. On the other hand, however, it also creates two other new states in both of which there are solid democrat majorities that are almost certain to elect four democrat Senators between them.

Many States are that way. For as liberal as Minnesota is, it's only a few bigger metro areas that are blue. Most farmers are conservative and that makes up much of Minnesota. But, the metro gets 5 of the 8 congressional seats. Minnesota hasn't voted Republican since 1968. We're also the 4th highest taxed State in the nation. All that and no one is calling for East and West Minnesota (liberals on the East and conservatives on the West).

It seems pretty standard that cities vote Democrat and the countryside votes Republican. Whether or not a state wants to split so that people can be better represented by the people they want to represent them doesn't have to be universal.

Yes, let them join with Canada, and Oregon, Washington, Main, New York, and so on. Then the predominantly Republican states could form their own country, call it the USA if they like, and all will be well ... for a few days anyway.

I wasn't thinking politically...just that the state has more weird people per capita than our other states ;) They shame us for thinking they're weird.

We should be so weird, they have the fifth largest economy in the world, are progressive on clean energy, have a budget surplus of 9 billion. I know most states including mine would be green with envy over those kind of numbers

I like the ring of "West Australia" and "East Almost Kiwi."
Or...perhaps North Tasmania.
