      Micah 6:6-8:
      With what shall I come to the Lord
      And bow myself before the God on high?
      Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings,
      With yearling calves?
      Does the Lord take delight in thousands of rams,
      In ten thousand rivers of oil?
      Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts,
      The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
      He has told you, O man, what is good;
      And what does the Lord require of you
      But to do justice, to love kindness,
      And to walk humbly with your God?

      This is my personal vision statement from scripture. I believe that every believer should have a scripture that serves as a guide for their life. What is yours?

      The three names of woman. When man was created, he was lonely. This was not an imperfection. It was (and is) an essential part of man's healthy nature. God said, "I will make a helper." (Genesis 2:18-22.) This word, "helper", has the idea of being surrounded. It is both strong (like the walls of a fort) and intimate (like arms extended around another). Then God brings all the animals capable of having fellowship with man--the beasts, the birds and the cattle--in order that man would understand that there is nothing in this world that can protect man from his loneliness and have the kind of intimacy which man needs. When woman is created, man names her woman, meaning "out-of-man". This is a declaration of spiritual and practical unity. Adam simple means "man". The first man and woman had no need to declare their separate identities. They were completely comfortable in their relationship with one another. It is only after the fall that woman is given the name, "Eve." Eve means "living." This naming was in contrast to the curse, "you shall surely die." It is an expression of hope and a recounting of man's fist covenant: "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth." It is not PC, but it is true that giving birth is a sacred event. God allows us to co-operate in the creation of one who is in God's image, and woman is the vessel for this wondrous event.

      II Timothy 3:1-7: But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
      Many look to world events as a sign of his coming. I think a truer standard is the character of mankind. But I also believe this is descriptive rather than proscriptive. Paul points out the two influences in Timothy's life that set him apart: the influence of godly women in his life (and paul being a godly man in his life) and the word of God.

      Psalm 40:1-3.
      For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
      "I waited patiently for the Lord;
      And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
      He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
      And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
      He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
      Many will see and fear
      And will trust in the Lord."

      Some believe that the life of the Christian should be an easy road, that suffering is a barrier to the work of God. Not so in scriptures. Suffering serves three purposes. First, it causes believers to rely upon him instead of themselves. Second, it becomes a touch point for our testimony as the unbeliever sees how we endure and overcome. Finally, it can be the avenue that leads an unbeliever into the faith.
      The story of Nebuchadnezzar is a good example of the third. (Daniel 4: 29-30) He lead an unchallenged life. but God destroyed his life and took away all upon which Nebuchadnezzar relied. Only when he submitted his life to God, was his life restored.
      There is no doubt that we should avoid suffering, but when it is thrust upon us, we should walk strong, sure of our safety in the Lord.

      John 8:31-33
      So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
      I am always surprised by the number of believers who are enslaved to sin. They are like these Jews, who believed and belonged, but were not disciples. Believing is sufficient for salvation, but alone does not bring freedom. Likewise, it is one thing to belong to a church and another thing to become a church.
      Discipleship is faith in working shoes. It is moving forward toward maturity. Believing and belonging is a stone being chosen. Discipleship occurs when the divine Mason shapes the stone and fits it into the structure of the church.

      In Paul's prayer, in Colossians 1:9-12, he lays out a roadmap to maturity.
      1. Direction: "that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding."
      2. Motivation: "so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects."
      3. Fruitfulness: "bearing fruit in every good work"
      4. Growth: "increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might"
      5. Steadfastness: "for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience."
      6. Gratitude: "joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light."

      James 1:2-4.
      Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
      I recently completed my season of pursuing the disciplines of a godly life. It is interesting that suffering is not listed as a discipline. The Bible teaches that perfection is not possible without suffering. It is difficult to see this while in the act of enduring suffering, but it is a means of grace.
