Scripture concerned: John, the whole of the 10th chapter, and more broadly, the book of John in general.
Please provide scriptural support for your answer that fits all elements of the story. If you want to blame your pastor, or a church, or a denomination, that isn't going to work, since readers of this passage throughout the ages could not all know of either later individuals or organizations, and I sincerely believe the passage is meant to be understood by ALL, including the disciples at some point in their lives.
