Maybe it's just something he inherited from his ancestors.

Ha! He's born in Holland. I wouldn't say. Although the name gives it away.

That's one of the main factors in choosing the ambassador to any country, you know.

Really? I had no idea.
I find it so dumb that they force the guy to apologize. Who cares?
But its funny to see that he's not used to it.

Well, that wouldn't be the case in a country like yours, but with a multi-cultural country like the USA, it usually comes into play. Not always, of course, and not with the career diplomats as often. But yes, the ambassador to Guatamala was born and raised there; the amb to the Philippines is an Asian-American; the amb to the Vatican is a devout Catholic, the amb to Ukraine is Slavic, and so on.

I find it so dumb that they force the guy to apologize. Who cares?

...which does surprise me, considering that he was a prominent member of Congress for several terms and ran for other offices. This should not be such a problem unless there is something we're not noticing.

I guess he just heard something from someone. If someone tells me something completely false about a place in America I could be just as dumb to not check it and repeat it. But it is true that there are places you rather not hang out alone at night and one politician got murdered w a knife by an Islam extremist years ago. Or he mixed us up with another country.

Wow. Sad. It's gotta be a Trump thing. I've met Pete Hoekstra before, and this ain't the same guy. Of course, he ran for Senator and lost to the Democrat. That'll send 'em off the deep end, too

I have not followed this particular piece of news very carefully, but I have the feeling that the big deal here was simply that he used a term that's highly charged and brings a lot of other associations to mind. I will bet that Hoekstra could have said essentially the same thing--but not used that term--and it wouldn't have become the issue it did.

He was right though. They do burn politicians here. Just not literal.
