You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor a likeness of anything that is in heaven above or on earth below, nor of those things which are in the waters under the earth. You shall not adore them, nor shall you worship them. I am the Lord your God: strong, zealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my precepts. No false gods of any kind visible or invisible.
How does "strange gods" differ from false gods?

Different words. Just like "strange" and "false" differ in english ... maybe

      I'll look it up
Pope Gregory I was well known for his alms to the poor, and he gave quite generously of the riches donated to the Church by the wealthy people of Rome. Everything from money to land was given to the poor in some fashion. He made clear to his subordinates that their duty was to relieve the distress faced by the poor.

He ordered his clergy to go out into the streets to find and care for the poor in person.

Wouldn't any other "god" besides the one true one be a FALSE god? That's what I was taught. Strange god is not the true God so it is false.

Yes, any other god is a false god in Christian teaching. That doesn't change the words though. "false" and "strange" are really different words both in English and in Hebrew.
