First Commandment

Thou shalt have no other gods before me

What is the main reason God emphasised "no other gods" if by default the israelites must have already accepted the one true God of Abraham? If any worshipped another god why would they even bother with these commandments?
Not to be confused with the 2nd commandment "Thou shalt not worship any graven image", not to adapt in gentile worship.
Even in polytheistic Egypt they still served Yahweh hence what made them so different, so shouldn't they serve him by default without the commandment instructing them to? (in theory, not arguing with Yahweh [emoji56]) lest they follow another god in which they would just toss out all the commandments.
Or did they think they could throw in some extra/side gods along with their one monotheistic God, which goes against their monotheistic faith?

Our "god" is whatever is #1 in our lives, whatever we'd be willing to dump everything else for....

Often people think of material things as "gods" in people's lives, but I think often health and family are what is #1.


When we claim we are "monotheists," it means NOTHING is put in that #1 spot but the true Lord God.

So basically idolatry?
and the 2 commandment would be not so much as personal idolatry but rather making an image of him with man made statues and such. right?
Can you give me some examples of putting God first? I can see doing certain things and considering God above it so it becomes Godly in all ways and not in vain. When you say "gods" I think of other types of refuge besides him such as alcoholism or pornography addiction etc.
Pastor gave a really good sermon on serving other "gods" without actually listing any spiritual "refuge" but I understood the message non the less

The first commandment is Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

I haven't read the responses on the thread but looking at your questions brings back a bible study with my previous pastor who had a deep love for history. Knowing the history helps it to make sense. Time and time again, God's people kept turning away from Him even days after declaring their utmost devotion! God is the one who kept turning them back to Him (repentance) and He still does the same for us as (lo, I will be with you all the days Jesus declared).

When we break that commandment, we have broken them all.

The beginning of the commandments given at mount Sinai is this

I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, out of the house of servitude. You shall not have strange gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor a likeness of anything that is in heaven above or on earth below, nor of those things which are in the waters under the earth. You shall not adore them, nor shall you worship them. I am the Lord your God: strong, zealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my precepts. [Exodus 20:2-6]​

No false gods of any kind visible or invisible.

Wouldn't any other "god" besides the one true one be a FALSE god? That's what I was taught. Strange god is not the true God so it is false.

Yes, any other god is a false god in Christian teaching. That doesn't change the words though. "false" and "strange" are really different words both in English and in Hebrew.
