What do you think about a Christian school denying a student who got pregnant prior to graduation from walking with her class in the ceremony?

I think they are driving a wedge even deeper, she should be allowed to take part in graduation

I say support that girl as much as possible. She's gonna need it.

If her pregnancy is the only reason she cannot do the graduation walk with her class, I think it speaks volumes of negativity for the decision makers at that school.

So then should defying a school code of ethics be cast aside?

IMO, graduating is the result of meeting the graduation requirements of the school. I guess IF it was CLEARLY stated in print and to both the student and her parents WHEN SHE APPLIED that graduation mandates one be a virgin up to and including the day of graduation - then yes, I suppose they could deny graduation to this person. I'd simply want it clear this is equally applied to all (including boys, and girls who didn't get pregnant or who "terminated" it).

I'd be curious..... was the father of the child also denied a diploma? What if a student got an abortion? Or raped a girl? Or caused a car accident in which innocent people were hurt? Or the student who is guilty of gluttony? Now..... if the school also denied diplomas to all the students who were guilty of adultery (including porn), all who violated any of The Big Ten, all who had sinned - then I guess I'd see the point. But I suspect the number of grads would be small.

Now. IF this girl was "with child" and was CLEAR and LOUD in insisting there is nothing wrong with premarital sex and was promoting and encouraging other students to have lots of sex - then, well, that's another issue, perhaps. We don't know much about the situation in the OP.

So then should defying a school code of ethics be cast aside?

If the ethics are unethical, then yes.

The twisted part of this is that if the female in question got an abortion, then she wouldn't be in violation of the "ethical standards" of the school and could do the walk.

Again, if her pregnancy is the only thing barring her from doing the graduation walk, AND the school is defending it's position on "ethics" - then I think it's way less about ethics than about priggishness and saving face.

Codes of ethics that are for some and not for others, ethics for some conduct and not for other behaviors, all smell of division and exclusiveness.

I'd be interested in knowing if the boy who got her pregnant also goes to that school, and if he'll be allowed to take part in the graduation ceremony.

I'll hunt and see if I can find the most recent story. I know this has happened more than once ;)

I found a few news links and they all said the same thing. The boy does not attend the school, the two are not getting married and she did sign a vow at the beginning of the school year to not be involved in immoral activity.

The school has posted a message:
http://heritage-academy.net/

It's an independent Christian school, not affiliated with any denomination.

She isn't being punished for being pregnant but due to immoral activity.
