Turnips - a vegetable I haven't had in many many years! So long I've forgotten what it tasted like.

A little steamed then added salt and olive oil...tasty.

A few cubed pieces, sauteed in a tomato/onion/salt sauce. Mmm.

And I understand they are easy to grow? I think I may grow some too.

Having a morning hot drink of dandilion/chickory with a homemade creamer. The creamer actually tastes not too bad. Made from a can of coconut milk heated slightly with a Tbs maple syrup, and added tsps of vanilla and almond essence.

It's a lot less expensive. It could be made with whole cream too so it doesn't have the coconut taste.

We were discussing making vanilla extract in one of the threads. It's made with an alcohol base and vanilla pods.

YES! It's so expensive to buy. It's a lot of money to invest in start up for the homemade vanilla and ValleyGal actually got me interested.

What I did was buy the vanilla beans on Amazon (B grade I think they were). I found them
25 Tahitian Extract Grade B Vanilla Beans 4~6" *** VERY DRY ***

Then I bought a large bottle of vodka and poured about 8 oz out of the bottle...1.75 litre bottle of the cheapest vodka I could find ($8.99). I think a slightly smaller bottle would have taken less time though since I've been waiting now 4 months and it's not quite ready yet.

Then I bought some cheesecloth for straining when it's ready and glass bottles on Amazon to put the vanilla into once it's done.

So, I chopped up the vanilla beans into 1/2" pieces and put them into the vodka bottle. The vodka I poured out is in a clean water bottle and I might use it as a second time for the beans once this batch is done. Every day (except a week when I was out of town) I shook the bottle for about 20 seconds and it's placed on the floor of the pantry out of the light.

Just lately I have noticed that it's smelling less like vodka and more like vanilla and the color is beautiful! Once I'm happy with it I will strain out the beans and pour the vanilla into the bottles and keep some for myself and give some to relatives for birthday gifts :) Then I'll reuse the beans in that small bottle of leftover vodka and see if I can get it to make more. It should.

When you cook with the vanilla the alcohol burns off from what I've read. I also found a non-alcohol kind to make but haven't tried it. It's made with vanilla beans, salt (for preservation) and distilled water. Sounds interesting.

Bruschetta! Yum. Do you pronounce it correctly with a "k" sound? :lick:

I had some plain oatmeal today. I was hungry but didn't want to eat anything big.
