Herbs are useful and for the most part safe like anything in moderation and only according to directions, if you pick your own plants make sure you know how to identify and use them. Some are very alike and some of the ones alike are poisonous so I dont recommend doing this unless you are sure of identification

This is a good point whenever harvesting anything yourself.

I was curious to see if I could find any edible mushrooms in the woods. I got a guide book about mushrooms and set out to see what I could find. The guide book gives all sorts of pointers to identify mushrooms and with each listed species includes a number of other species that look similar, along with ways to differentiate between them.

On one of my first outings I found something that ticked a lot of boxes that made me think it was a chanterelle mushroom. They are desirable and apparently quite rare so I was a little sceptical that I might have stumbled across them so effortlessly. Still, I cut one and took it home to assess it further. It wasn't a chanterelle, it was a jack-o-lantern. It looks much the same but grows in a different habitat and is poisonous. I still want to go out and gather more of them because apparently they glow in the dark.
