It should be understood in those terms qua science...

eg It is NOT some divinely revealed scientific accounting of the Cosmos and the earth therein...

I've been involved in several discussions of just this....

IN MY OPINION, as a "Bible believing" Protestant but also one with a Ph.D. in physics, is that hermeneutics requires that we not impute OUR views into Scripture via eisegesis. Today, we tend to think like modern scientists and people IMPUTE that thinking and those assumptions into things never so intended. This impacts the Bible quite obviously when it comes to numbers and physics.

I MY fallible (and probably wrong) opinion, Genesis 1-2 and the many verses that suggest that our planet is small, flat and square are simply not teaching geology or astrophysics and that eisegeses of our science assumptions and mindset are inapproprate. The verses are 100% true (and literally so) they just aren't addressing science.

I think that holy scripture can be read as teaching a flat disc shaped earth. A circle above which are the Heavens and below which are the pillars of the earth, a watery deep holding the waters under the earth from which some of the flood of Noah's day is said to have come, and sheol where the dead abide until judgement day.

If you have seen the introductory commentary to "The Hog Father" then you will get a view of the disc world which - aside from the turtle and elephants - is somewhat like the circular disc mentioned above.

Right, the Bible never claims that the Earth is a round sphere nor does it say it is flat, it only says that the circle of the Earth can be seen from Heaven.

Nowhere does the Bible explicitly teach a coherent cosmology but on the basis of multiple unrelated verses it seems reasonable to conclude that the dominant Biblical cosmology was of a flat earth. However, the early Christian church quickly adopted the Ptolemaic cosmology of a global earth. I believe this was tied into Christianity losing its Jewish roots in the first century.
