From what I can see most of them aren't doing anything specific, just scaring people by being there. If it hasn't happened already it can't be very long before a clown gets themselves shot - I read one report of a hunter in a tree stand who called the police for an escort because of someone in a clown costume holding a big knife (which was itself stupid, given the guy in the tree stand was presumably hunting and therefore most likely had either a rifle or a bow). It can only be a question of time before someone sees a clown in their back yard and reaches for their .357 rather than their phone.

He did well to call the police because it would be bad to rely on his gun and possibly shoot the clown-costumed figure.

In a place where he wasn't facing an immediate threat to his life it is a much safer route, legally speaking. I think had he fired on the clown the justification would have been the knife rather than the clown costume. I think if I were walking somewhere very quiet and encountered a clown figure with a big knife and they showed potential aggression I'd be reaching for a weapon rather than my cellphone.

If the clown had a weapon I'd rather face them with a weapon than turn my back and hope I didn't trip on something when trying to flee.

ETA: To an extent it would depend on the context. If the clown were obviously someone likely to run far less efficiently than me then retreat would make a lot of sense. If I thought I was likely to be outpaced by nutter-with-knife I'd be reaching for something to take them down fast.

Not really, just a desire to stay alive. Given the choice between taking preemptive action to take down the nutter with the knife or running away knowing I was likely to get the knife in my back, I'd lean more towards the former.

It was a lovely sunny Spring day here. Got up to 28c (82f). It was cooler inside. Quite nice all round.

Church accounting was good today, got it all done early, had a nice lunch, chatting for a bit, helped make things for Melbourne Cup tomorrow. All in all it was pleasant.
