The mythic description of the Christian crusades was that Christian Europe had a holy obligation to set the holy lands free of the oppressive rule of Muslim empires. The reality is much less religious and much more complex. The Protestant revolt and reformation also has a religious myth which differs from the reality wich is much less religious and much more complex. The same is likely true of the Great Awakening and of more recent claims to revival. Yet the mythic retelling of history persists. People like the myths and desire their simplicity and beauty. Reality is more prosaic and pedestrian.

Colonialism also shares a mythic retelling along side of a reality that is more pedestrian.

The only one calling it a "holy" crusade was RCC. It was not holy for the Jews, Christians of other faiths, or Muslims..

is it not humorous almost how he refers to the protestant revolt .. but they didn't not revolt against god .. they revolted against rome who was teaching against gods word ..

neither were innocent of wrongdoing .
