My daughter currently has a college checking with little to no fees. Once she graduates she won't be able to keep that account so I'm wondering which banks have either no or small fees for a checking account with a low or even 0 balance?

Is there such a thing these days?

Community banks may, and I think citizens bank has a basic account with no frills and no fees.

Most credit unions offer free checking accounts.

I have a free checking account but I don't think my bank is in too many states.

I don't know much about credit unions. Are they pretty much local?

I'm worried that my daughter signs up for a bank that is only local and when she goes to visit other relatives she will be charged fees to use her ATM card.

Yes, most CU's are local (county or state, anyway). They all have their own policies about ATM's of other institiutions.... Yeah, if she travels a lot and uses the ATM a lot, it might make sense to go with Bank of America or Chase and just play the monthly fee. The big national banks are ideal for the frequent traveler - not only for ATM reasons but also to have branches available.

Most C.U.s are within a co-op of C.U.s to grant each other's members a broader range of use. If you turn a CU's card around and on the back are a group of symbols that you look for on another CU's ATM and if they display one of those symbols they grant the user free ATM usage. I've used their card clear across the country the only problem is it's still not like a full membership with that other CU. They often just offer free ATM usage.

So take money out before she goes. At least the atm fee is largely optional.

That's funny. My daughter is a huge procrastinator! If she needs to get something done it's either at the last minute or OOPS I forgot or didn't have time :)

Paying fees when you drop the ball soon gets the point home.

If you stop would that help teach her

That's what I thought, the lesson week never get through if there are no consequences for not planning ahead. If forgetting to get money before she travels costs her a couple of bucks with each withdrawal she'll learn much faster.

I understand but if its only a couple dollars? That would hurt as her income is non existant or very limited
