Psalms and hymns in worship.

It appears from what is written in the holy scriptures that the psalms were intended to be sung by the people of Israel in the sacred convocations before the tabernacle and before the temple. The psalms are inspired songs, poems, prayers. Hymns can be passages from the holy scriptures set to a tune and sung like the psalms. Is it right to sing hymns that are not passages taken from the holy scriptures but rather are poems and songs written by Christians who are not claiming divine inspiration for their work?

If they don't claim divine inspiration hmm you could sing it in church. Sometimes they don't even know it's inspired, but if it's obviously not I wouldn't sing it in church.

In Toronto they took a part of a secular song and changed the lyrics. Instead of it's allright now baby it's allright now they sang: it's allright now, Jesus it's allright now.

There is nothing forbidding us from singing hymns that don't have quoted scripture and there are some nice ones out there, but you can't beat having God's word feed you in the service with hymns containing scripture!

In the Mass we sing Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The first line is song of the seraphim in Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8. The second part is what the crowd cried to Jesus at his triumphal entry into Jerusalem Matthew 21:9 and that is based upon Psalm 118:26.

I have not heard of them before. Thanks for sharing. We chant the psalms in church and they are really beautiful.
