From the article: The plaintiffs are six men with varying religious backgrounds who are incarcerated at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in Woodbourne. They include a Baptist, a Muslim, a Seventh-Day Adventist and two practitioners of Santeria, as well as an atheist.

“A solar eclipse is a rare, natural phenomenon with great religious significance to many,” the complaint reads, noting that Bible passages describe an eclipse-like phenomenon during Jesus’ crucifixion while sacred Islamic works describes a similar event when the Prophet Muhammad’s son died.

I always thought being in prison was some kind of punishment.

Jesus often went into the wilderness. I'm not an expert on the Qu'ran by any means but I suspect Muhammed may have done the same. Maybe inmates should have the right to go into the wilderness whenever they want too?

Viewing an eclipse is not a necessity to life, so no, they don't have that "right". It's a want, not a need.

~Update~

Six inmates who sued New York's corrections department over its decision to lock down prisons during next Monday's total solar eclipse will get to watch the celestial event after all.

Lawyers for the six men incarcerated at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in upstate New York said Thursday that they've reached a settlement with the state that will allow the men to view the solar eclipse "in accordance with their sincerely held religious beliefs.”

More-->N.Y. prison will let inmates go outdoors to view eclipse after lawsuit.

What do their religious beliefs have to do with a solar eclipse?

It was not an eclipse when Jesus was on the cross. Luke 23:44 says that it was dark from the sixth hour to the Ninth hour. Eclipses don't last three hours.
