https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/20/politics/donald-trump-shutdown-border-wall-funding/index.html

A holiday government shutdown appeared more likely on Thursday after President Donald Trump informed House Republicans he would refuse to accept a stop-gap measure -- already passed by the Senate -- that doesn't include funds for his long-promised border wall.

What was once a deal to avoid a Christmas partial shutdown was torpedoed Thursday by conservatives and Trump, who unleashed fury at another agreement that stops short of providing the $5 billion the President has demanded for the border.
It was a closing burst of wrath in the final days of the Republican-majority House. If Trump cannot secure the money he is demanding for the wall now, it's unlikely he will see a spending bill that meets his requirement for at least two years as Democrats assume control.

So, looks like we are going to have a government shut down. Do you agree with what Trump is doing? Why or why not?

I haven't made it any secret that I am not a fan of Trump. I think that Congress needs to pass a budget and not spend money like it is unlimited and stop us going further and further into debt

I don't agree with what he is doing or the way he is going about it. He is acting like a big baby throwing a tantrum by shutting the govt. down without the wall. I don't think a wall would do any good. There are ways to still get in this country if a wall were there. It cost too much, too, and we need other things more. I don't think the Mexicans are a big threat to us anyways. We have our own home grown unhinged people that do more harm than immigrants. The immigrants are not a big problem to us-it is a figment of Trump's imagination. He has blown a few cases of crimes into a major immigrant problem that does not exist. Can't wait till the Democrats take over the house next month.:birthdaysmiley:

Well, only about 8% of the budget would be affected. It's popular to call it a "shutdown," but it really is far from that. That aside, the president almost must insist, considering that this is the #1 issue on the agenda of his supporters and the main issue on which he campaigned, as it also was with many of the members of Congress.

By the way, anyone who thinks that a porous border is no big deal, just does not know the facts. If I try real hard, I can almost sympathize with people who say the wall itself is not a good idea while professing that we need something else done, but the notion that there is no problem at all is just naïve.

Over the course of history a number of different walls have been built at great expense --- the Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, the Berlin Wall, The Iron Curtain, the Maginot Line, the Siegfried Line --- all failed and are now little more than tourist attractions. Trump's Wall is just another Iron Curtain.

Donald said that USA tax payers would not pay for the wall so why does he need five billion dollars of tax payers' funds for it?

Well, the Berlin Wall worked quite well and Hungary has recently built a string of barriers of some sort along its borders in order to keep out Islamist invaders, and it is reported to be working very effectively. And how about the #1 example--Israel? She began construction of a wall about six years ago and most of the world said she shouldn't do it, that it wouldn't work, etc., yet in the last year before the wall, there were over 50,000 illegal entrants, whereas in the first year after its completion there were fewer than 10!

Try to remember that we are a people that has traditionally valued the rule of law. We don't just impeach people because we had hoped that the other candidate had won instead. Well, most of us anyway; you do have Maxine Waters and some others of her ilk on your side there, not that that's anything to be proud of..

I'm not a fan of his or even Hillary. I didn't vote for either of them. What I am a fan of is the wall. We need it and we need it now. It just kills me how much it's going to cost tho.

Look, I didnt say because he won. He has endangered our national security and helped the russians in doing so. His national security advisor just resigned over differences and it is obvious that he is dishonest, he needs to go

I suspect MOST voted for Trump because he was a non-politician, a man who said what he beleives and believes what he says. Even if they didn't agree with him, at least they could trust that he'd keep to his word. I wasn't one of them (I didn't vote for ANYONE for president in 2016) but I think that was the #1 reason people gave for who did.

It THEREFORE amazes me when people rebuke him for being/doing the very thing they elected him for. Unlike nearly everyone who has served as president before him, he is doing pretty much what he promised he'd do. And he was elected in large part because people thought he would.

I see this "wall" thing as BOTH confirmation and rejection of this. He made a huge point about that wall in the campaign and was elected in part for it. SHOCK! He's actually keeping his word. On the other hand, he promised Mexico would pay for it (made a big deal of that) and he's abandoned that, now asking taxpayers to pay for it (he's NOW talking about Mexico essentially re-embursing us via taxes - a whole other enchilada, lol). I see this as Trump keeping and breaking his promise.

I must say that I have noticed that you speak to the point when it comes other issues, but on this matter I am reading the vaguest and most trivial complaints. One day you want him impeached for something imaginary and then a few days later it's something new that is supposed to amount to the unforgivable sin. I hear it from some Democratic member of Congress one day, and it's here in red ink and italics the next. ;)

Bottom line he is a liar, a bigot, a man who is untrustworthy. He has just handed the russians and the Iranians and the Turks all they want and have removed any barrier to a wholesale slaughter of our allies over there. He is the worst president this country has ever seen and now on top of all that he wants to shut the government down for a very long time. Personally I hope he does and does it for a long time and then we will see how many Republicans get reelected. Of course forget the poor people whjo will be suuffering because of his gigantic ego. Call this what you want but it is fact he is a womanizzer, a liar, and is dangerously close to being a traitor.

The top reasons I heard from some of my Republican friends who voted for Trump is that he isn't Hilary and he will nominate conservative Supreme Court Judges who might overturn Roe vs Wade.

Tell us what you REALLY think, Bill.....

As for some wholesale rejection of Trump, well...

1. We just had mid-term elections, where the libs told us there would be an anti-Trump REVOLUTION and the Dems would sweep both houses in a landslide (in true, some Republicans said this too). But the Republicans GAINED seats in the Senate and "lost" only about the average number of seats in the house as typically happens in mid-terms toward the president's party. Bottom line: There is NOTHING in the mid-terms that reveals any widespread rejection of Trump.

2. Yup, the very people who elect a president often turn on him in approval polls... ALWAYS happens! Trump is in the same general ballpark as most presidents in the past at the two-year point. Indeed, a president with the LOWEST approval at this point (Reagan) went on two years later to win one of the biggest landslides in history. There's nothing in the polls that suggest some huge rejection of him.

3. Yup, Trump has his personal issues. And there was a time (LONG, LONG ago) when Americans cared about that. But remember: Clinton ADMITTED to a FELONY committed WHILE IN OFFICE and no one gave a rip. Clinton finally (after lying about it over and over) finally admitted to sexually assulting a young female intern... right in the Oval Office of the White House.... and the press shouted that it doesn't matter... and his wife (and future presidential candidate) threw the woman under the bus and insisted that women generally make these things up for publicity. Trump may PERSONALLY be a jerk.... but here's the reality, few Americans care - about Clinton or Trump or anyone else for that matter. Even FELONIES committed while in office don't matter, not a bit, not at all, doesn't matter, no one cares.

4. There is NO SIGN that any Republican plans to run against Trump in 2 years..... We'd expect by now committees to have been formed, BIG contribution events happening.... NONE of that is happening; there appears to be no Republican wbo plans to take him on or who things they can defeat Trump for re-nomination. Even among the Democrats, it is SHOCKING how little is happening! By this point, we usually have declared candidates and lots of events, but so far, pretty much crickets over at the Democrat's Party. So if YOU think he's sunk, it seems you may hold to a minority position. There's no evidence the politicians agree with you. Oh, there WILL be a campaign but with no "sure bet revolution" behind it.

5. I'm not sure I disagree with you on being close to a traitor. But then I think that fits Hilary Clinton even more.... I'm shocked she's not in jail right now. Yeah, she's a democrat and thus the liberal Press protects her but still.

Democracy may be the best system there is.... but that doesn't make it good.

A meaningless recitation of random insult words really doesn't impress as much as you might think. It also does absolutely nothing to convince the rest of us of anything other than what we may surmise about your own character.
