I'm just curious about what everyone said they wanted to do when they grew up and is anyone actually doing it?

From what I can remember I believe I said I wanted to be a fireman or a police officer.
I am actually a mental health therapist

I wanted to be a few things but art always stood out. I ended up going to Art School and am still an artist although I haven't done much art this year.

I wanted to draw cards and sell them for 1 cent so everyone would come to me cause mine were the cheapest.
I make maps and only for ppl from the company, so they don't have to pay for it themselves.
Cards, maps. I was close.

so what do you do now?

I went in the Navy as an avionics tech and worked at several companies afterwards doing technical work. Right now I am in a sales position for one of those companies.

When I was younger I wanted to be a Park Ranger in either Canada or South Africa, looking after wildlife. South Africa fell out of the equation when they declared UDI and before I finally got to Canada, I met my would be wife and she did not want to emigrate. So I became a Quantity Surveyor instead.

I had to look that job up. I worked in a field where they did some construction and we had a Cost department so I'm thinking it's the same thing?

Is it a smaller company? I worked for a worldwide company that had many offices so there were jobs that you probably do that are split into 5 or more groups.

So what is your job?

I am not an astrophysicist. I am retired now. I was a research officer in the Bureau of statistics for a while then a computer programmer for a while then a systems analyst then a project manager then a systems architect then various things in management. I did earn two degrees from university. Both were useful but neither was directly part of my work except for the brief time as a research officer in the bureau of statistics.

You might get along well with IDay... ?

When I was very young, I wanted to be an athlete. A runner, to be specific. Then by the time I was in high school, that changed to social worker. I took the long way there, though... I was a cashier, receptionist, nurse, spa practitioner/owner, and finally got my social work degree in 2010. I suppose I should have started with that. lol

I definitely took the long way to my present career. I started in church ministry, then let there and did retail and then collections and then was a chaplain and then went into mental health work as a qualified professional and then in my 40's decided to get my masters in counseling. Funny thing is that in my 20's I looked into the degree plan but decided I didn't feel like listening to people's problems all day. Guess I wasn't ready

I can't afford a master's, but if I could afford to take a year off work and pay the $25,000 for it, I'd get a MSW (Clinical). As it is, in July, I finished a post degree diploma (30 credits at the 5th year level) in mental health and addictions. Having done that, though, I think I'd rather do "clinical" as in counselling psychology. My PDD is good for understanding my current clients, though, so I have no regrets.

Is that what you do now with your degree...listen to people's problems all day?

Not really. I am on a team of three people right now so I supervise the other two and then do family and individual counseling. I like to do art and play therapy so I usually have art supplies with me to do with the kids I serve. We try to offer suggestions on parenting techniques and other practical things that held with managing kids behaviors that can be difficult.

No kidding! I do parent education. My clients are involved with the Child Protection Ministry here, and they are referred to my small team. We teach attachment based parenting as well as do 1:1 counselling with them - usually things like how their attachment style as children influences adult relationships as well as their parenting attachment style. A lot of our parents deal with their own (or their children's) difficult behaviours, emotional dysregulation, and unhealthy coping. We'll have to create a thread to bounce ideas back and forth. lol
